Event Background

As the Chairman of ASEAN in 2023, Indonesia is firmly committed to driving the achievement of crucial agendas across various sectors, including energy. The primary objective is to promote sustainable energy transition, strengthen energy independence, and enhance the region's energy resilience. To this end, one of the most significant energy sector agendas under the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2023 is the launch of the Long-term ASEAN Renewable Roadmap, a pivotal step towards advancing the energy transition in Indonesia and ASEAN.

Among the diverse array of renewable energy alternatives, biofuel stands out as an imperative choice for Indonesia and ASEAN. Extensive experience in Indonesia, Malaysia, and several other ASEAN countries has demonstrated the ability of biofuels as a sustainable alternative to reduce reliance on fossil fuel imports, thereby bolstering energy security and supporting economic development. Hence, it is critical to engage in compelling and resolute dialogue, backed by unwavering commitment, to solidify the vital role of biofuels within the ASEAN Long-Term Renewable Energy Roadmap during the 2023 ASEAN Chairmanship for the benefit of ASEAN member countries and the overall region.

To support that agenda, Indonesia Palm Oil Strategic Studies (IPOSS), in collaboration with the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE), Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries (CPOPC) is organizing an international seminar on "Integrating Biofuels as the Main Pillar of ASEAN Renewable Energy Development for a Resilient and Sustainable Just Energy Transition." This event is a side event of the ASEAN Chairmanship of the Energy Sector under the coordination of the Senior Official Energy (SOE) Leader of the ASEAN Chairmanship 2023.

This event will feature three insightful topics of discussion that aim to engage constructive dialogues, they are: (1) Unveiling the Potential of Biofuels: Exploring their Cleaner, Greener, and Sustainable Attributes for ASEAN's Energy Transition, (2) Biofuels as Contributors to Economic Development: Examining their Impact on ASEAN's Economic Landscape, and (3) Driving ASEAN's Sustainable Future: Exploring the Collaborative Role of Biofuels in Energy Development.

These discussions will delve into the significant potential of biofuels, highlighting their cleaner and greener characteristics that offer a sustainable solution for ASEAN's energy transition. We will examine how the development of biofuels can contribute to economic growth and prosperity in the region, fostering a collaborative environment for ASEAN countries to collectively advance sustainable energy initiatives.

This event will be combining in-person and on-line seminar and is intended to bring international experts and policy makers to have a close dialogue with investors and business communities, international think tank, academics, and media.

Unveiling the Potential of Biofuels: Exploring their Cleaner, Greener, and Sustainable Attributes for ASEAN's Energy Transition

Discussion Synopsis:

Biofuels offer a cleaner and greener substitute for conventional fossil fuels, leading to a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution. By embracing biofuels, we actively contribute to mitigating climate change and improving air quality, paving the way towards a more sustainable future. Moreover, biofuels can be harnessed from organic waste, including agricultural residues, food waste, and algae. As Indonesia and other ASEAN countries possess substantial reserves of organic waste, presenting a valuable opportunity to convert this waste into precious energy resources.

Biofuels as Contributors to Economic Development: Examining their Impact on ASEAN's Economic Landscape

Discussion Synopsis:

The production of biofuels, which relies on feedstocks such as sugarcane, palm oil, and various oilseeds, also holds immense potential for stimulating agricultural development and empowering rural economies. In Indonesia and other ASEAN nations, where agriculture plays a pivotal role in the economy, the promotion of biofuel production creates new opportunities for farmers and contributes to the prosperity of rural livelihoods and accelerate poverty reduction. From an economic standpoint, the biofuel sector's development and its associated supply chains hold tremendous potential for generating robust growth and creating numerous employment opportunities. Investments in biofuel production infrastructure, research and development, and manufacturing pave the way for a thriving industry. As the sector expands, it creates job opportunities across the entire value chain, from farming and processing to distribution and retail.
